Urban renovator and politician Εdi Rama makes a case for politics, at TEDxThessaloniki 2012. Once a painter, Rama talks about bringing color across many of Tirana’s old buildings and communist era high rises, arguing that beauty, if offered a chance, will bring beauty. Rama is an Albanian politician, painter, publicist, professor, former athlete and is currently the leader of the Socialist Party of Albania. He served as Mayor of Tirana for three consecutive terms from 2000 to 2011. As Minister of Culture he is known for the creative and effective manner in which he promoted culture and arts in Albania. Rama was given an award by Kofi Annan in light of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, was named World Mayor in 2004 and was chosen by Time Magazine in 2005 as one of the “European Heroes”, those who are changing the world for the better.
